“You Want It When???” Utilizing 3D Design to Assist with Fast Track Delivery

Abstract
Sixteen months to develop a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER), design a 30 MGD pump station, and begin operation seems a daunting and unachievable task. It seems even more overwhelming given the need for an Environmental Assessment, a DWQ Individual 401 Certification, and a Corps Individual 404 Permit. The use of 3D modeling tools was a key solution to successfully achieving this expedited project schedule.
During the preparation of the PER, Brown and Caldwell developed three alternatives in 3D utilizing “Google SketchUp” and overlaid the images onto Google Earth to help visualize the locations. The 3D modeling tools allowed the client to visualize each alternative and its respective impact on the surrounding marina, golf course and other area amenities. Accessibility from the existing water treatment facility, proximity to an earthen dam, and impacts in the lake reservoir were also critical factors.
Once an alternative was selected, a team of experts was deployed to lead the various engineering disciplines. To meet the strict time constraints, professionals in five different states were utilized. A 3D model of the pump station and raw water intake was built for the structural and process mechanical portions of the project. With a dynamic 3D model in play, conflicts were minimized and review parties were quickly able to identify potential problems and confirm available locations for wall penetrations and equipment.
Virtual walkthroughs were also part of the client reviews. These visuals helped stakeholders conceptualize the intent of the design.
